Jordan Luke Gage confirms Redcliffe return after Stage Debut Award win
Jordan Luke Gage, creator and lead performer of the musical Redcliffe, has confirmed the show’s return following his award at The Stage Debut Awards. The news comes after the production’s successful premiere earlier this year at Southwark Playhouse Borough.
Jordan Luke Gage, who wrote the music, lyrics and book for Redcliffe, announced the musical’s return as he collected his first trophy at The Stage Debut Awards. The production premiered at Southwark Playhouse Borough in early 2024, where it earned a five-star review from WhatsOnStage.
Redcliffe is set in 18th-century England and tells the story of William Critchard and Richard Arnold in Redcliffe, Bristol. Gage also played William Critchard in the original production, portraying their relationship against the backdrop of a time when being gay was illegal.
In his award acceptance, Gage dedicated his win to the real-life men whose story inspired the musical. “They dared to love each other in a world where it was illegal to be gay and it was considered the worst crime of all. I can only imagine how terrifying that must have been,” he said.
He added that he hoped the two men “are looking down and are proud that we are continuing to say their names,” highlighting the show’s commitment to remembering historical LGBTQ+ narratives.
Redcliffe’s initial success, combined with Gage’s recognition at The Stage Debut Awards, underscores a growing interest in stories that bring lesser-known chapters of history to the stage through original musical theatre.
Details regarding the new run of Redcliffe, including dates and venue, have yet to be confirmed. The musical’s focus on historical LGBTQ+ experiences forms part of a broader theatrical trend exploring untold personal and social histories.
