The Lord of the Rings musical to premiere in Istanbul before 2027 international tour
A new production of The Lord of the Rings musical will open at Istanbul’s Zorlu Performing Arts Center in October 2027. The international tour will visit multiple cities across Europe and the Middle East, bringing Tolkien’s epic tale to a wide audience.
The production, directed by Bruce Guthrie from Mumbai’s National Centre for Performing Arts, will launch on 8 October 2027 at the Zorlu Performing Arts Center. The narrative follows Frodo Baggins after inheriting a gold ring from his uncle Bilbo, which sets off a perilous adventure.
Scenic, video, and puppetry design is by Tony and Olivier Award winner Andrzej Goulding, noted for his work on Life of Pi. The musical’s score is a collaboration between Academy Award winner A R Rahman, Finnish folk group Värttinä, and Tony Award winner Christopher Nightingale, with book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus.
Following its Istanbul opening, the production will tour cities including Bucharest, Prague, Warsaw, Thessaloniki, Tallinn, Athens, Sofia, Zagreb, and Dubai. Additional venues and dates have yet to be confirmed.
The production is cast and rehearsed in the UK, with auditions planned for early 2027. Producers Kevin Wallace, William Bennett, George Isaak, and Middle-earth Enterprises are behind the show, while Peter Huntley and Callum Runciman serve as executive producers and general managers.
George Isaak expressed enthusiasm about the project, describing it as an “Epic Stage Adventure” that aims to bring Tolkien’s story to theatre audiences across Europe and the Middle East. Kevin Wallace highlighted the creative team’s dedication to creating a production that resonates with fans of the trilogy and epic live entertainment.
Fredrica Drotos, Middle-earth Enterprises’ brand steward, praised Guthrie and Goulding for recreating a fundamental stage adaptation that offers a fresh perspective on Tolkien’s trilogy. The production aims to inspire new reflections on the original texts.
The previous UK run of The Lord of the Rings musical was abandoned last autumn, making this new production a significant revival and reimagining of the material for international audiences.
