Fly, You Fools! Lord of the Rings parody to premiere in London and Birmingham
The Lord of the Rings live parody Fly, You Fools! will make its London debut at Southwark Playhouse Borough this November, followed by a brief run at Birmingham Rep. The show condenses the first film into a 60-minute physical comedy performance.
Fly, You Fools!, a shot-for-shot live parody of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, is set to premiere in London from 25 November 2026 to 16 January 2027 at Southwark Playhouse Borough. An opening night will take place on 27 November, and the production will then move to Birmingham Rep for five performances between 20 and 23 January.
Created by the team behind the comedy shows Hold On To Your Butts and Recent Cutbacks, Fly, You Fools! features four performers who use physical comedy, live sound effects, and mime to recreate Middle-earth on stage. The show condenses the original 178-minute film into a brisk one-hour theatrical experience.
The parody debuted at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where it was praised by WhatsOnStage’s chief critic Sarah Crompton with a four-star review. The upcoming London run coincides with the 25th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
Directed and co-founded by Kristin McCarthy Parker of Recent Cutbacks, the production is produced by Peter Huntley, Callum Runciman for Smart Entertainment, Heather Shields for Rigor + Ruckus and Recent Cutbacks, in association with 2nd Row Comedy. The team also includes lighting designer James Appleby and key artist Ligature Creative.
Original performers Nick Abeel, Kyle Schaefer, and Matt Zambrano bring the story to life, supported by Foley artist Blair Busbee and a cappella arranger Kelsey Didion.
Kristin McCarthy Parker said the London run had long been a dream, especially in the film’s 25th anniversary year. Producer Peter Huntley announced the news on Hobbit Day, the fictional birthday of Bilbo Baggins, adding to the show’s Tolkien-themed appeal.
The production reflects a growing trend in live comedy to adapt beloved film properties through inventive physical theatre and parody, reaching both niche fandoms and broader audiences.
