Full cast revealed for European premiere of The Jonathan Larson Project

The Southwark Playhouse has announced the complete cast for the European premiere of The Jonathan Larson Project, running from July to August 2026. The production features new talent alongside established performers, commemorating 30 years since the composer’s death.

Southwark Playhouse Borough will stage The Jonathan Larson Project from 9 July to 22 August 2026, marking the show’s European debut after an Off-Broadway run at the Orpheum Theatre. The piece features songs drawn from Larson’s archives, offering insight into his creative development, and is conceived by Jennifer Ashley Tepper with music and lyrics by Larson.

The cast includes Max Harwood, Marcus Collins, Michael Mather, Grace Mouat, Imelda Warren-Green, and newcomer Georgie Butler, a Guildford School of Acting graduate, alongside Edward Flynn Haddon from Laine Theatre Arts. Both Butler and Haddon secured their roles following an open search for two cover parts inviting performers with no professional musical theatre credits.

Casting director Rob Kelly emphasised the importance of widening access to the industry through the open search, saying, “Georgie and Edward brought something honest and instinctive into the room, and that’s exactly what this piece needs.” Kelly highlighted that the project reflects Larson’s focus on outsiders “fighting to be seen and heard,” a spirit central to the production.

The creative team is led by director John Simpkins, with musical direction by Livi Van Warmelo, set and costume design by Justin Williams, and lighting design from Samuel Biondolillo. General management is handled by Thomas Hopkins Productions, who co-produce the show alongside SAMS Entertainment with Julie Larson as executive producer.

The show’s run coincides with the 30th anniversary of Jonathan Larson’s death in January 1996, the day before Rent’s first New York performance. The Jonathan Larson Project explores the artist’s legacy through songs that reveal his early work and evolving artistry.

A bonus episode of The WhatsOnStage Podcast is available for free to hear from the cast. The production offers a platform that advocates for inclusivity and emerging talent, reflecting ongoing challenges and conversations in the UK theatre industry.
