What is The Ballad of Johnny and June about?

The musical takes you inside the soaring highs and shattering lows of the love story between Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, following them from the stage to the road through triumphs, heartbreak, addiction, fame, and redemption, told through the eyes of their son John Carter Cash so you see both the legends and the family behind the music.

What songs and musical style can I expect?

The show is packed with legendary hits including I Walk the Line, Ring of Fire, Hey Porter, Jackson, and I’ve Been Everywhere, blending country, rockabilly, gospel, and heartfelt ballads to match the passion and pain of their relationship.

Who created and directs the musical, and has it won any awards?

The Ballad of Johnny and June has a book by Robert Cary and Des McAnuff, with music and lyrics by Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, and others, and is directed by two-time Tony Award winner Des McAnuff, whose previous shows include Jersey Boys, The Who’s Tommy, and Summer: The Donna Summer Musical; earlier North American productions have earned strong reviews and regional awards and nominations for performances, direction, and orchestrations.

Who stars as Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash?

The UK and Ireland tour is led by Christopher Ryan Grant as Johnny Cash and Christina Bianco as June Carter Cash, with a full company of actor-musicians bringing the story and classic songs to life on stage.

How long does the show last and is there an interval?

The running time for the touring production is around two and a half hours including an interval, which is typical for a large-scale musical biography and gives time for both key life events and a generous selection of songs.

Is the show suitable for children and families?

The production is generally recommended for older children and adults because it includes strong language, depictions of drug and alcohol abuse, a rifle briefly seen on stage, and emotionally intense scenes, so it is best suited to teenagers and adults rather than very young children.

Do I need to know Johnny Cash’s music to enjoy the show?

You do not need to be a long-time Johnny Cash fan to enjoy the musical because it is written as a clear, emotional story about love, fame, and second chances, with the songs used to support the drama so fans can relive familiar hits while newcomers discover the music through the characters’ journeys.

How can I get cheap tickets for the Richmond dates?

To find cheaper tickets, look at midweek performances instead of Saturday night, compare prices for seats in the upper levels or side sections, book as early as possible before the best-value central seats sell out, and sign up to Richmond Theatre and ticket-seller mailing lists so you hear about presales, promo codes, and limited-time offers.

Are there discounts or special offers available?

Discounts can include advance booking deals, off-peak performances with lower prices, group rates for larger parties, and concessions for certain age groups, so it is worth checking for student, under-26, senior, or family tickets and asking the box office which dates currently offer the best value.

Can I buy last-minute tickets and how do I get to Richmond Theatre?

Last-minute tickets are often available if a performance has not sold out, and you may sometimes find returns or single seats at good prices, but the best combination of price and choice usually comes from booking midweek dates in advance; Richmond Theatre is on The Green, a short walk from Richmond station for rail and Underground services, with local buses and nearby parking options for drivers who allow extra time for traffic and to find a space.
