What is The Bodyguard musical about?

The Bodyguard is a romantic thriller musical based on the 1992 film, where former Secret Service agent Frank Farmer is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker, and as they clash over control of her security, they unexpectedly fall in love against a backdrop of fame, danger, and powerful hit songs.

The show features a full Whitney Houston soundtrack including Queen of the Night, So Emotional, One Moment in Time, Saving All My Love, Run to You, I Have Nothing, Greatest Love of All, Million Dollar Bill, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and the unforgettable I Will Always Love You, all performed live on stage.

Has The Bodyguard won any awards?

The Bodyguard is promoted as an international, award-winning smash-hit musical, and the original film soundtrack is one of the most decorated of all time, winning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and Record of the Year for I Will Always Love You, along with multiple American Music Awards, BRIT Awards, and Oscar nominations for I Have Nothing and Run to You.

The Mayflower lists the running time as approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes including an interval, which is typical for a big musical and gives enough time for both the thriller plot and the full concert-style song list.

Is The Bodyguard suitable for children and families?

The age advice for Southampton is 10 and over, under-twos are not allowed, and there are warnings for haze effects and mature themes, so while older children may enjoy the music and story, families should be aware of suspenseful scenes and some strong language.

You do not need to have seen the original film to enjoy the show because it works as a stand-alone stage thriller with clear storytelling and huge musical numbers, but fans of the movie will recognise familiar characters, key scenes, and many of Whitney Houston’s most famous songs.

How much are tickets for The Bodyguard in Southampton?

Ticket prices at the Mayflower currently start from around £24.50, with other bands ranging up into the £40–£50 range depending on performance and seating area, so you can choose a price that fits your budget.

Are there group or school discounts available?

The Mayflower offers group discounts such as £6 off for groups of 20 or more with one free ticket per 20 paid, and school and young persons’ groups of 10 or more can get all tickets at a special lower price on selected performances, with one free supervisor for every twenty, making it good value for large parties.
