Quentin Tarantino’s The Popinjay Cavalier to Debut in West End with Sacha Baron Cohen
Quentin Tarantino’s theatrical debut, The Popinjay Cavalier, has been confirmed for a West End run at the Phoenix Theatre in 2027, starring Sacha Baron Cohen. The production promises a fresh comedic take inspired by classic swashbuckling epics.
Quentin Tarantino’s first play as a writer and director, The Popinjay Cavalier, will open at London’s Phoenix Theatre in February 2027, with previews starting on 23 February and an official opening night on 18 March. The comedy, set in 1830s Europe, explores themes of deception and disguise, drawing influence from classic Hollywood swashbuckler narratives by George Bruce, Ernst Vajda, and Jesse Lasky Jr.
Sacha Baron Cohen will take on the title role, marking his West End debut. He expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration with Tarantino, stating he accepted the role before the director could finish his sentence and joking about not expecting gentleness from the filmmaker. Tarantino himself described the project as a chance to give West End audiences “a great night out.”
The production is being presented by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions. Tom Rothman of Sony and producer Sonia Friedman praised Tarantino’s immersive rehearsal process and lauded Baron Cohen’s casting as “fearless” and fitting for the inventive demands of the role.
Key members of the creative team include scenic and costume designer Tom Pye, lighting designer Natasha Chivers, sound designer Ian Dickinson, fight director Philip d’Orleans, action coordinator Sam Lyon-Behan, composer Tim Phillips, and casting director Jim Carnahan. Additional star casting will be announced in the near future.
The Popinjay Cavalier is booking until 13 June 2027, with tickets going on sale immediately. Prices start at £25, with over 16,000 tickets available for under £50 throughout the run.
This high-profile collaboration brings a celebrated film director’s distinctive voice to the West End stage, combining theatrical tradition with Tarantino’s signature style and star power in Baron Cohen.
