Ben Platt to lead UK premiere of Midnight at The Never Get in London

Tony Award winner Ben Platt will star in the UK premiere of the new musical Midnight at The Never Get at the Menier Chocolate Factory. The show, set in 1960s New York, marks a significant collaboration with Golden Globe and Grammy winner Mark Sonnenblick.

Ben Platt will headline the new musical Midnight at The Never Get, opening at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory on 20 July and running through 12 September. This production marks the UK premiere of the show, which features book, music, and lyrics by Mark Sonnenblick. The musical is directed by Tony Award winner David Cromer.

Set in 1965 New York City, Midnight at The Never Get follows the secret romance of Trevor Copeland and Arthur Brightman, who defy convention by performing love songs together at a nightclub. The narrative blends personal struggle with musical expression, framed by the atmosphere of a vibrant 1960s nightclub.

Mark Sonnenblick, who received both a Golden Globe and Grammy for his work, emphasized the personal importance of the show and his excitement in collaborating with Platt again. “He’s a once-in-a-generation performer,” Sonnenblick said, praising the opportunity to present the show in the Menier’s intimate setting.

Ben Platt, who rose to fame for originating the title role in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway, called the production his first full run on the London stage. He described working with Sonnenblick as a special experience and highlighted the creative team, including director David Cromer, as key to realising the piece afresh for UK audiences.

The production benefits from the set design expertise of Scott Pask, complementing the period setting and mood of the musical. Full casting details have not yet been released, with updates expected closer to the opening.

Platt is also preparing for a concert version of The Last Five Years with Rachel Zegler this summer, marking a busy period for the actor in musical theatre. Midnight at The Never Get offers a fresh exploration of love and secrecy through its vintage nightclub lens, reflecting ongoing interest in stories set against mid-20th century backdrops.

The Menier Chocolate Factory production brings together celebrated talent from across the Atlantic, signalling continued vibrancy in London’s musical theatre scene with original works and acclaimed performers converging on intimate stages.
