Georgie Buckland, known for her role in Mean Girls, is set to headline the stage musical adaptation, which opens at Manchester Opera House in February 2025 before touring until early 2027. The production offers a fresh take on the cult 2004 film, promising a lively exploration of high school social hierarchies.
The musical “I’d Rather Be Me,” based on the 2004 Paramount Pictures film Mean Girls, will launch at the Manchester Opera House on 23 February 2025. Georgie Buckland, who previously appeared in Mean Girls on screen, leads the cast in this stage version retelling the story of Cady Heron.
Following its Manchester debut, the show will embark on a UK tour continuing through to the end of January 2027. Among the confirmed dates is a three-week festive run at Birmingham’s Alexandra Theatre, highlighting the show’s extended reach throughout the regions.
Set in North Shore High, the musical delves into the complex social politics as Cady Heron seeks to navigate and ultimately unsettle the dominance of the “Plastics,” the school’s infamous clique. The production offers a blend of humour and drama reflecting teenage social dynamics.
The tour’s final batch of dates has recently been released, signalling a robust schedule over nearly two years. The creative team remains consistent with the original film’s themes while adapting the story for a live audience.
A rehearsal room video provides a glimpse of the cast in action, including Georgie Buckland, hinting at the energetic and polished performance to come. Fans can anticipate a faithful adaptation with a fresh theatrical spin.
The ongoing tour of “I’d Rather Be Me” is part of a broader trend of adapting popular films into stage musicals, capitalising on established audiences and offering new dimensions to familiar stories. The extensive tour schedule reflects confidence in the show’s potential appeal across the UK.
