David Haig and Hadley Fraser to star in Magic premiere at Chichester Festival Theatre
Magic, a new play by David Haig exploring Harry Houdini and Arthur Conan Doyle’s relationship, will have its world premiere at Chichester Festival Theatre this April. The production, led by Haig and Hadley Fraser, opens amid the centenary of Houdini’s death.
Magic will run at Chichester Festival Theatre from 24 April to 16 May, with a press night scheduled for 5 May. The play is directed by Lucy Bailey and stars David Haig as Arthur Conan Doyle and Hadley Fraser as Harry Houdini.
Set against historical events, Magic marks the 100th anniversary of Houdini’s passing and examines the complex friendship between the famed escape artist and the creator of Sherlock Holmes. The drama delves into themes of belief, mystery, and the supernatural.
David Haig returns to Chichester, having premiered his acclaimed play Pressure there in 2014, which later transferred to the West End and internationally. Pressure will also be adapted as a film starring Andrew Scott, releasing later this year.
The supporting cast includes Jenna Augen as Bess Houdini, Claire Price as Jean Conan Doyle, along with Ben Jones, Marc Serratosa, Ella Tekere, François Testory, Jade Williams, and Kristin Wei Wong.
Lucy Bailey is also a familiar figure at the venue, having previously directed productions such as The Other Boleyn Girl and Tonight at 8.30 at Chichester Festival Theatre.
The creative team boasts Joanna Parker as designer, Aideen Malone on lighting, John Bulleid handling illusion design, Orlando Gough composing music, Beth Duke on sound, and Dick Straker contributing video design. Movement direction is led by Georgina Lamb and Ayse Tashkiran, with Kate Waters as fight director and Ginny Schiller overseeing casting.
Magic’s arrival adds to Chichester Festival Theatre’s vibrant season, continuing its reputation for premieres that engage with historical and cultural figures.
