Harriet Walter returns to RSC for 2026 Julius Caesar and Middlemarch revival
The Royal Shakespeare Company has unveiled key productions for its 2026–27 season, featuring Harriet Walter in Julius Caesar, Jonathan Groff in As You Like It, and a new adaptation of Middlemarch. The season promises a mix of classic and contemporary works tied to the RSC’s Associate Schools Programme.
Harriet Walter will star as Brutus in a revival of Julius Caesar directed by Phyllida Lloyd. This all-female production is set in a women’s prison and was first staged at the Donmar Warehouse in 2012.
The Julius Caesar tour will visit secondary schools across England from 21 September to 23 October, before playing at The Other Place in Stratford-upon-Avon from 5 to 28 November. The tour forms part of the RSC’s 20th anniversary Associate Schools Programme.
Jonathan Groff will lead the company’s production of As You Like It, continuing a season that also includes the previously announced Game of Thrones: The Mad King stage adaptation.
Meanwhile, Nina Raine has penned a new two-part adaptation of George Eliot’s Middlemarch, directed by Jeremy Herrin. The production is a co-production with Second Half Productions and will run at the Swan Theatre from 1 October to 16 January.
Press performances for Middlemarch are scheduled for 28 October, with Part One beginning on 1 October and Part Two from 10 October.
The season also features an adaptation of The Three Musketeers by Paul Hunter, presented in association with Told by an Idiot. This production will play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre from 28 November to 9 January, opening to the press on 8 December.
The Associate Schools Programme, marking its 20th year, will support the Julius Caesar tour with workshops and discussions in schools and community venues, alongside related events in Stratford during November.
Ticket sales for the season open in stages, with priority booking starting from 2 March and public booking from 18 March. Priority booking for Game of Thrones: The Mad King begins 14 April, with public sales starting 24 April.
