Frequently Asked Questions

When is Moulin Rouge! The Musical in Liverpool?

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is scheduled at Liverpool Empire from 2 July to 8 August 2026, giving audiences over a month of performances to choose from.

What is Moulin Rouge! The Musical about?

The story is set in Paris in 1899 and follows Christian, a young idealistic writer, who falls in love with Satine, the star performer of the Moulin Rouge nightclub. Their romance unfolds while the club struggles financially and depends on the backing of a powerful Duke, creating a love triangle filled with passion, sacrifice, and the fight to save the Moulin Rouge through a spectacular new stage show.

Has Moulin Rouge! The Musical won any awards?

Yes, the show is a major award-winner and has received 10 Tony Awards on Broadway, including Best Musical. It has also picked up an Olivier Award in London, including recognition for its elaborate costume design and overall production, which helps explain why it is touring to major cities like Liverpool.

Where is Moulin Rouge! The Musical playing in Liverpool?

The production will play at Liverpool Empire Theatre, one of the city’s largest and best-known venues for major touring musicals. Its central location and size make it a key stop on the world tour, with plenty of seating options across different price levels.

How long does the performance last?

The show runs for around 2 hours and 45 minutes, including an interval in the middle. This allows enough time for the full story, big musical numbers, and impressive staging, with a short break to get refreshments or use the facilities.

What age is Moulin Rouge! The Musical suitable for?

The musical is generally recommended for ages 12 and above because it includes mature themes, some sexual content, and occasional strong language. Young children are not usually admitted, so it is best enjoyed by teenagers and adults who can follow the more grown-up storylines.

How can I get cheaper tickets for Moulin Rouge! in Liverpool?

To find cheaper tickets, look at off-peak performances such as weekday evenings or early in the run, as these often start at lower prices than Saturday nights. Booking early, considering upper-circle or restricted-view seats, signing up for theatre or tour newsletters, and being open to a wider range of dates can all help you secure more affordable seats.

Are there last-minute or resale options for tickets?

If you are flexible, checking for returns or resale tickets can sometimes be a good way to save money, especially closer to the performance date. Some official resale platforms and box offices release extra seats or returned tickets at face value, which can be cheaper than buying at busy peak times.

What makes Moulin Rouge! The Musical special?

The show mixes a heartfelt love story with a huge mash-up of well-known songs, eye-catching sets, and glamorous costumes that turn the theatre into a vibrant nightclub. This blend of romance, humour, drama, and pop hits, along with its award-winning design and choreography, makes it feel like a concert, a play, and a party all at once.

Do I need to have seen the Moulin Rouge film first?

No, you can fully enjoy the musical without having seen the film, as the show clearly tells the story on its own. Fans of the movie will recognise familiar characters and moments, but newcomers will still understand the plot, connect with the characters, and enjoy the big musical sequences.

What should I wear to the show at Liverpool Empire?

There is no strict dress code, so smart casual clothing is perfectly fine for most performances. Some people like to dress up a little or add a touch of sparkle inspired by the show’s glamorous style, but comfort is the most important thing, especially when travelling and sitting for a longer performance.

Can I take photos or videos during the performance?

Taking photos or recording video is not allowed during the performance because it distracts the performers and other audience members and can break performance rules. You can usually take pictures in the foyer or by the posters before and after the show, which is a good way to remember your night without disturbing anyone.
