Norah Jones to compose new Practical Magic musical adaptation
A musical based on Alice Hoffman’s novel Practical Magic is underway, with Norah Jones creating the original score. The project involves key collaborators from the book, film, and theatre worlds, promising a fresh stage take on the beloved story of sisterhood and magic.
A new musical adaptation of Practical Magic is in development, drawing on Alice Hoffman’s bestselling novel and the 1998 Warner Bros. film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Producers Stephanie and Nicole Kramer and Brian and Dayna Lee, in association with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, are mounting the production.
The musical will feature an original score by singer-songwriter Norah Jones and Gregg Wattenberg. Alice Hoffman has co-written the book for the show with Peter Duchan, while Maria Friedman is set to direct. Mark Kaufman joins as creative consultant.
Set in Massachusetts, the story follows the Owens family, whose women have endured suspicion over a family curse for more than 200 years. Sisters Sally and Gillian Owens try to escape their cursed legacy after being raised by their aunts following the loss of their parents.
The novel was first published in 1995 and became a New York Times bestseller. Hoffman expanded the universe with several follow-up novels, including The Rules of Magic and The Book of Magic. The original story was previously adapted into a film, and a sequel is scheduled for release in cinemas in September 2026.
Hoffman expressed enthusiasm about the stage adaptation: “This story of love and sisterhood is meant for the theatre. Music is the heart and soul of Practical Magic, you can hear it as you read the book… Now you will finally hear the story as I always imagined it.”
RCI Theatricals will manage the general production, although details of the venue and launch date are yet to be confirmed. The development reflects ongoing interest in adapting literary and film titles into new musical theatre spectacles.
