Original Operation Mincemeat cast to perform free online concert after Broadway finale cancellation

The original Broadway cast of the musical Operation Mincemeat will perform a free online concert after their final scheduled Broadway performance was cancelled due to a snowstorm in New York City. This digital event captures the closing moment of a critically acclaimed musical with a devoted transatlantic audience.

The five original cast members of Operation Mincemeat—David Cumming, Claire-Marie Hall, Natasha Hodgson, Jack Malone, and Zoë Roberts—were due to give their final Broadway performance on 22 February at 7.30pm ET. However, severe weather conditions forced the cancellation of the show’s official closing night.

In response, the cast will instead present a live concert at 5.30pm ET (10.30pm GMT) from New York’s Laurie Beechman Theatre. The performance will stream free on the show’s official Broadway Instagram page, featuring all the songs from the production.

Operation Mincemeat is a zany, fact-based musical written by actors Cumming, Hodgson, Roberts, and Felix Hagan, members of the UK theatre company SpitLip, who have previously earned a Tony nomination for their work.

The musical has a notable history, beginning as a small-scale production at London’s New Diorama Theatre in 2019. It quickly built a dedicated following through sold-out runs at Southwark Playhouse and Riverside Studios.

In 2023, Operation Mincemeat officially premiered in the West End at the Fortune Theatre. It received significant accolades, winning the Olivier and WhatsOnStage Awards for Best New Musical and amassing 74 five-star reviews.

Jack Malone’s portrayal of Hester earned him both a Tony and an Olivier Award. He performs the standout ballad “Dear Bill” in the show, which also features Cumming as Charles Cholmondeley, Hall as Jean Leslie, Hodgson as Ewen Montagu, and Roberts as Johnny Bevan and other roles.

The production is directed by Robert Hastie with choreography by Jenny Arnold. The creative team includes Ben Stones (scenic and costume design), Mark Henderson (lighting), Mike Walker (sound), Steve Sidwell (orchestrations and vocal arrangements), and Joe Bunker (musical director).

This unexpected online concert marks the end of the cast’s Broadway run and offers fans worldwide a chance to celebrate the show’s unique story and musical achievements despite the disruption.
