The Haunting of Hill House stage adaptation to tour UK this autumn
A new stage adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House will premiere on a UK tour this autumn, bringing the iconic supernatural novel to theatre audiences. Adapted by Stef Smith and directed by Martin Constantine, the production aims to capture the unsettling spirit of the original work.
The world premiere of The Haunting of Hill House stage adaptation will open at Salisbury Playhouse on 11 September before embarking on a UK tour running through mid-November. The production visits Richmond Theatre from 6 to 10 October, with the national press night scheduled for 8 October, and continues to venues including Theatre Clwyd, Theatre Royal Brighton, Palace Theatre Manchester, Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, culminating at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh on 14 November.
The adaptation comes from Olivier and BAFTA Award-winning writer Stef Smith and is directed by Martin Constantine. The production is a collaboration between Wiltshire Creative and Theatr Clwyd, presented by Mark Puddle alongside Alexander “Sandy” Marshall and Patrick Myles.
Laurence J Hyman, Shirley Jackson’s son, praised the initiative, expressing his enthusiasm for the novel’s legacy continuing on stage. “I’m thrilled that this haunting classic will return in a new form,” he said, noting the adaptation’s intent to preserve the novel’s “remarkable and unsettling spirit.”
Stef Smith described the project as a privilege, highlighting the novel’s strong theatrical qualities. She noted the production will delve into suspense and the supernatural while exploring human fears and relationships, following a group investigating Hill House and encountering disturbing events within the building.
Shirley Jackson’s original novel has long inspired adaptations across film and television. Jackson, who lived from 1916 to 1965, is credited with writing six novels, two memoirs, and over 200 short stories, including notable works such as The Road Through the Wall and We Have Always Lived in the Castle.
Tickets for the production went on sale at midday, with full casting and further creative team members to be announced. A selection of dates is currently available through the official ticket outlets.
