Giles Terera to Play Scrooge in Old Vic’s 10th Anniversary A Christmas Carol

Giles Terera has been cast as Ebenezer Scrooge in the Old Vic’s landmark 10th anniversary production of A Christmas Carol, directed by Matthew Warchus and adapted by Jack Thorne. The show has added extra performances following a sell-out run last year.

Giles Terera joins the Old Vic to play the iconic role of Ebenezer Scrooge in the 10th anniversary staging of A Christmas Carol. The production, running from 10 November 2026 to 9 January 2027, is directed by Matthew Warchus and adapted for the stage by Jack Thorne. Due to popular demand, two additional performances have been scheduled for 10 and 11 November.

Warchus described Terera as “such an impressive performer” who is “both barnstormingly entertaining and heartbreakingly truthful.” He expressed excitement at welcoming Terera to this cherished production in its milestone year.

Terera returns to the Old Vic after appearing as Dale Harding in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest earlier in 2026. He said he is “delighted” to play Scrooge in this “extraordinary production” and called it “a real honour” to perform in Matthew Warchus’s final year as artistic director.

The creative team includes Rob Howell on set and costume design, Christopher Nightingale on composition and arrangement, Hugh Vanstone handling lighting design, Simon Baker on sound design, and movement direction by Lizzi Gee. Casting is led by David Grindrod, following original casting by Jessica Ronane, with Jamie Manton serving as associate director.

Matthew Warchus has guided the Old Vic since 2015 and will step down as artistic director at the end of 2026. This production of A Christmas Carol marks a significant moment in his final year at the theatre.

The celebrated adaptation and production continue to revive one of literature’s most treasured stories, bringing fresh energy to a seasonal favourite on the London stage.
