Frequently Asked Questions

When is Back to the Future The Musical in Sunderland?

Back to the Future The Musical is at Sunderland Empire from 13 April to 8 May 2027, with performances across weekdays and weekends during this four week run.

Where is Back to the Future The Musical playing in Sunderland?

The show is playing at Sunderland Empire on High Street West, a large city centre theatre close to local bus routes and Sunderland station, making it straightforward to reach by public transport or car.

What is Back to the Future The Musical about?

The musical follows teenager Marty McFly, who is accidentally sent from 1985 back to 1955 in a time machine built by eccentric scientist Doc Brown, where he disrupts his parents’ first meeting and must race to fix the past, restore the space time continuum, and get back home.

Has Back to the Future The Musical won any awards?

Back to the Future The Musical is a multi award winning production, including the prestigious 2022 Olivier Award for Best New Musical along with Best New Musical wins at the WhatsOnStage Awards and Broadway World Awards, recognising its score, design, and overall production.

What kind of music does the show feature?

The show mixes brand new songs written by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard with classic hits from the film soundtrack, including The Power of Love, Johnny B Goode, Earth Angel, and Back in Time, so audiences hear both fresh musical theatre numbers and iconic movie tracks.

How long is the performance at Sunderland Empire?

The performance usually runs for about two hours and forty minutes including an interval, so you should plan your evening or matinee so you have enough time to arrive, enjoy the full show, and leave the theatre comfortably afterwards.

Is Back to the Future The Musical suitable for children?

The musical is generally suitable for families and older children, with lots of humour, big visual effects, and music, but it does include mild language, loud sounds, and moments of comic peril similar to the film, so very young or sound sensitive children may find some scenes intense.

How can I get cheap tickets for Sunderland dates?

To get cheaper tickets, look at midweek performances instead of Friday and Saturday nights, choose earlier dates in the run rather than the final weekend, and consider upper circle or side view seats which are usually priced lower than central stalls while still offering a good overall view.

Are there discounts or special offers available?

You may be able to save with early booking prices, off peak performances, group discounts, or occasional promotional offers, so it helps to compare different dates and times, avoid the highest demand shows, and sign up for theatre or ticket seller email lists where sales and presales are often announced first.

Can I buy last minute tickets for Back to the Future in Sunderland?

Last minute tickets can sometimes be found if a performance has not sold out, and checking close to the date may reveal returned or late release seats, but for popular evenings and the closing weekend it is safer to book in advance if you want the best choice of seats and prices.

What makes the Sunderland production special?

This Sunderland run is part of the first UK tour of the multi award winning musical and brings the full scale production, including the onstage DeLorean, time travel effects, and a large cast, to one of the North East’s biggest theatres, creating a lively atmosphere with local and visiting audiences.

How far in advance should I book Sunderland tickets?

Because the Sunderland dates are limited and fall after other major tour stops, weekend and school holiday performances can sell quickly, so booking these earlier gives you better seat and price options, while more flexible theatregoers may find stronger value on midweek performances at the start of the run.
