Jeezus! musical returns to London’s New Diorama Theatre with expanded run
The award-winning musical Jeezus! is set to return to London this spring at the New Diorama Theatre, following acclaim at the 2025 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The production offers an irreverent exploration of colonialism, sexuality and faith in 1990s Peru.
Jeezus! will run at the New Diorama Theatre from 21 April to 9 May 2026, with a press night on 24 April at 7.30pm. The production is an expanded version of the show that won the Untapped Award in 2025 at Edinburgh Fringe.
The musical is co-produced by migrant-led company Alpaqa and New Diorama Theatre. Written and performed by Sergio Antonio Maggiolo, Jeezus! is set during Alberto Fujimori’s dictatorship in 1990s Peru, centred on Jesús, an altar boy confronting unexpected feelings surrounding the figure of Christ on the cross.
Maggiolo, who plays Jesús, appears alongside collaborator and partner Guido Garcia Lueches, with both actors portraying multiple characters. The production is directed by Laura Killeen and includes live music performed by Tom Cagnoni.
The score combines Latin pop, salsa, South American folk styles such as cumbia, and reggaeton-inspired beats, all played live on stage. The show delves into complex themes including colonialism, sexuality and sin.
Maggiolo commented that the show is “not here to mock religion” but to wrestle with its contradictions, ecstasies and hypocrisies. He described Jeezus! as “a love letter; to queerness, to myth, to the kids who thought they were going to hell.”
Emma Clark, head of programme at New Diorama Theatre, praised the production as “sexy, ferocious, and hilarious,” highlighting Alpaqa’s commitment to placing Latinx and migrant stories at the forefront.
The return of Jeezus! continues the recent trend of bold, politically charged theatre exploring identity and faith through innovative storytelling.
