Jessica Swale and Vicky Featherstone develop new musical God Is A DJ

A new musical titled God Is A DJ is in development, written by Jessica Swale and directed by Vicky Featherstone. The production aims to bring club and DJ culture to the theatre, exploring themes of relationships, fame, and music.

God Is A DJ is a collaboration between writer Jessica Swale, director Vicky Featherstone, and musical supervisor Matthew Brind. It combines a live DJ and band with dance music to tell its story. The show’s title track was created by composer David Arnold, songwriter Karen Poole, and dance music artist Sam Harper.

Swale, known for writing the Paddington musical, recently worked with Brind on that production. Featherstone, formerly artistic director at the Royal Court, brings her experience and passion for club culture to the project.

The musical aims to challenge traditional theatre forms by mixing intimate storytelling with immersive sound. Swale described it as an opportunity to “explode boundaries” and fuse music with live performance in new ways.

Featherstone cited her love of ’90s Manchester clubbing venues like the Haçienda and the Paradise Factory as inspiration. She emphasised the communal and transcendent qualities of dance music and the DJ’s role in creating a sense of belonging and escape.

Producer Irit Ten Hengel, who previously worked on the musical Obsessed, conceived the project. Donna Munday is serving as executive producer.

Further details, including casting and production dates, have yet to be announced. The show promises to explore both the celebratory and darker aspects of club culture within a theatrical context.
