La La Land stage musical adds Mandy Moore and Mary Zophres to creative team

The La La Land stage musical has solidified its creative team with the addition of choreographer Mandy Moore, costume designer Mary Zophres, and production design studio 59 Studio. These appointments strengthen the adaptation of the award-winning 2016 film ahead of further announcements.

The stage musical adaptation of Damien Chazelle’s La La Land has brought on board key collaborators from the original film, including Mandy Moore as choreographer and Mary Zophres as costume designer. Both collaborated on the 2016 movie, which earned six Academy Awards including Best Director and Best Actress for Emma Stone.

Joining Moore and Zophres is Tony-winning production design studio 59 Studio, known for its work on Stranger Things: The First Shadow, with Edward Pierce as design collaborator. The studio’s theatre credits also include The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, The Last Ship, An American in Paris and War Horse.

These new creative appointments were announced by producers Lionsgate and Marc Platt. They join previously announced director Bartlett Sher, book writers Ayad Akhtar and Matthew Decker, composer Justin Hurwitz, and lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, completing an experienced creative roster for the stage adaptation.

La La Land tells the story of an aspiring actress and a jazz musician pursuing their dreams in Los Angeles, themes that captivated audiences in the film’s critical and commercial success. The stage version is produced by Platt and Lionsgate Global Products and Experiences.

Further information regarding casting, performance dates and venue is yet to be confirmed, with producers set to reveal more details in the coming months.

The inclusion of principal creators from the film hints at a continuity of vision for the stage version, aligning with a recent trend of film-to-musical adaptations drawing directly on original cinematic teams.
