New staging of The Snowman to premiere at Birmingham Rep this autumn
A brand new production of The Snowman, the beloved Christmas tale by Raymond Briggs with music by Howard Blake, will open at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre this October. This fresh interpretation promises to bring the classic story to life for a new generation of theatregoers.
The new staging of The Snowman will run at Birmingham Repertory Theatre from Tuesday 20 October to Sunday 1 November 2026. Following this, the production will transfer to the Peacock Theatre in London, where it will be presented from Saturday 21 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027.
Based on Raymond Briggs’s picture book and the animated film directed by Dianne Jackson, the story follows a boy whose snowman comes alive on Christmas Eve. Together, they embark on a magical journey, meeting Father Christmas and his reindeer.
First staged in Birmingham in 1993, The Snowman has toured across the UK and regularly appeared at the Peacock Theatre during the festive season. This new version aims to renew the charm of the story and music for today’s audiences.
The production is directed and choreographed by Will Tuckett, featuring design by Anna Fleischle and video design by Nina Dunn. Illusions are created by Chris Fisher, with puppet design by Daisy Beattie.
Will Tuckett expressed his enthusiasm for the project, recalling his own memories of the book and film, and highlighted the enduring appeal of Howard Blake’s score. He described the opportunity to reimagine the story to that music as “a privilege”.
Priority booking opens on Friday 6 March, with public tickets available from Tuesday 10 March. The Snowman remains a seasonal favourite that continues to resonate decades after its first stage adaptation.
