Toby Stephens to lead Menier Chocolate Factory’s Equus revival
Toby Stephens has been cast as psychiatrist Martin Dysart in a new revival of Peter Shaffer’s Equus at the Menier Chocolate Factory, bringing fresh attention to the psychological drama. The production will run in London before transferring to Theatre Royal Bath this summer.
Toby Stephens will star as Dr Martin Dysart in Equus, directed by Lindsay Posner, at the Menier Chocolate Factory. The revival runs in London from 8 May to 27 June, followed by a transfer to Theatre Royal Bath from 13 to 25 July.
Equus focuses on Dysart’s treatment of a 17-year-old boy who has blinded six horses, prompting the psychiatrist to question the nature and ethics of his own therapeutic methods. The play originally premiered in 1973 and has enjoyed multiple UK and international revivals since.
Stephens is known for his extensive stage work, including seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre. His recent theatre credits include Oslo, Private Lives, and A Doll’s House.
In addition to his theatre work, Stephens has appeared in television and film projects such as Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Lost in Space, and Black Sails.
The production’s creative team features set and costume designer Paul Farnsworth, lighting designer Paul Pyant, composer and sound designer Adam Cork, and movement director James Cousins.
Further casting details are yet to be announced, with the revival promising a nuanced exploration of the play’s enduring themes.
