10 Things I Hate About You musical with Carly Rae Jepsen to open on Broadway in 2027

A new musical adaptation of the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You will debut on Broadway exactly one year from today, featuring a score by Carly Rae Jepsen. The production brings a contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew to the New York stage.

Producer Mike Bosner has announced that 10 Things I Hate About You will begin performances on 17 August 2027, marking the musical’s Broadway opening. The show is adapted from the Touchstone Pictures film written by Karen McCullah and Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith, which starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Alison Janney.

The story follows new student Cameron James, who is infatuated with Bianca Stratford and strategises to get her antisocial sister Kat to date Patrick Verona, an approach devised to bypass their father’s strict dating rules. This plot reworks Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew with a 1990s high school setting.

The musical’s score is composed by Carly Rae Jepsen and Ethan Grushka, pairing Jepsen’s pop sensibilities with Grushka’s musical contributions. The book is penned by Lena Dunham and Jessica Huang, who collaborate to adapt the film’s narrative for the stage.

Christopher Wheeldon, a WhatsOnStage Award-winning director and choreographer known for MJ the Musical, will direct and choreograph the production. Tom Kitt, recognised for his work on Next to Normal, is involved as music supervisor and orchestrator.

The production is made possible through a special arrangement with Buena Vista Theatrical. Details on casting, the full creative team, and the theatre venue remain to be confirmed.

The musical adds to a growing trend of Broadway adaptations drawn from popular films, blending familiar stories with new musical voices, signalling a continued interest in reimagining 1990s cultural touchstones for contemporary audiences.
