High School Musical revival extended at Salford’s Lowry with immersive set
The UK premiere of Disney’s High School Musical non-replica production has extended its run at the Lowry in Salford, responding to strong demand. This fresh staging marks 20 years since the original film’s release.
Produced by Hope Mill Theatre, Chris Harper Productions, and the Lowry, the new High School Musical revival will now run at the venue’s Lyric Theatre until 19 September 2026, having originally opened 21 August. The theatre space has been reconfigured to create an immersive basketball court setting featuring on-stage seating and an extended playing area.
The adaptation features a book by David Simpatico with music adapted, arranged, and produced by Bryan Louiselle. It is co-directed by Joseph Houston and William Whelton, founders of Hope Mill Theatre.
Casting announced so far includes Tobias Turley as Troy, Leonor Correia as Gabriella, Caitlin Tipping as Sharpay, and Luke Bayer as Ryan. The full cast is yet to be revealed.
Creative credits include choreography by Aaron Renfree, set design by Andrew Exeter, sound design by Matt Peploe, and video design by George Reeve. Lighting is designed by Rory Beaton, costumes by Sophia Pardon, with musical supervision by Katy Richardson and musical direction from Audra Cramer.
High School Musical draws on beloved numbers from the original film including “Breaking Free”, “We’re All In This Together”, “Get’cha Head in the Game”, and “Stick to the Status Quo”.
Originally performed in 2006 at Stagedoor Manor Summer Theatre Camp, the show received its professional debut in Atlanta and toured the US under Disney Theatrical in 2007 before its London premiere at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2008.
This revival represents the first UK non-replica production, allowing for fresh creative interpretations aligned with the production’s immersive staging approach at the Lowry.
