Rambert to adapt Russell T Davies’ It’s A Sin into new dance work
Rambert has announced a dance adaptation of Russell T Davies’ Channel 4 drama It’s A Sin, set to premiere at Aviva Studios in Manchester. The production will reinterpret the 1980s AIDS crisis story through contemporary dance, marking a key event in Rambert’s centenary year.
Rambert is developing a new stage work inspired by the acclaimed It’s A Sin television series, created by Russell T Davies. The piece will premiere at Aviva Studios in Manchester and is co-produced with Factory International.
The dance work draws on the original story set between 1981 and 1991, following young gay men and their friends during the HIV and AIDS crisis. It will combine choreography, archive material, and visual design to reinterpret the narrative through movement.
Benoit Swan Pouffer, Rambert’s artistic director, will choreograph and direct the production, collaborating again with dramaturg Kaite O’Reilly on a new script. Davies will serve as an executive producer alongside Pet Shop Boys and Glyn Fussell.
Music for the production will be composed by Roman GianArthur with contributions from Pet Shop Boys. Visual design will be led by Luke Halls Studio, complementing the company’s contemporary dance aesthetic.
The stage piece is a co-production with Wales Millennium Centre, Edinburgh’s Capital Theatres, Sadler’s Wells, and Les Théâtres de la Ville in Luxembourg. Details on casting and performance dates are yet to be confirmed.
This announcement is part of Rambert’s centenary programme, including its FUTURE100 events scheduled across London, Manchester, and Edinburgh. The company will also tour its production This is Rambert in the UK and internationally in 2026.
