Thelma & Louise musical to debut at Young Vic with Rachel Tucker lead

A new musical adaptation of the cult film Thelma & Louise will have its world premiere at the Young Vic Theatre in September 2026, starring Rachel Tucker and Amy Lennox. The production marks a notable collaboration featuring a book by original screenwriter Callie Khouri and music by Neko Case.

Thelma & Louise will run at the Young Vic from 3 September to 24 October 2026 as part of the theatre’s upcoming season. The production is a co-production between the Young Vic, Sonia Friedman Productions, Blue Spruce Productions, Ley Line Entertainment, and Callie Khouri, with Mandy Greenfield in association with MGM On Stage.

Callie Khouri, who wrote the original Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer motion picture, has penned the book for the musical. The story follows two friends on a spontaneous road trip that escalates dramatically after a pivotal encounter at a roadside bar.

Rachel Tucker will star as Louise alongside Amy Lennox as Thelma, with direction by Trip Cullman. The creative team includes choreography by Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber, scenography by Christine Jones and Brett J Banakis, and costume design by Ryan Dawson Laight.

Additional creative roles include lighting design by Natasha Chivers, sound design by Gareth Owen, musical supervision by Kimberly Grigsby, orchestrations by John Clancy, and musical direction by Ed Bussey. Extra music contributors are Carl Newman, Paul Rigby, and Zoe Sarnak.

The production features creative producers Mandy Greenfield and Sonia Friedman, casting by Stuart Burt with associate Peter Noden, fight direction by Kev McCurdy, intimacy direction by Yarit Dor, and voice and dialect coaching by Danièle Lydon. Chelsea Walker is associate director, with Matthew Buttrey and Rob Jones as associate designer and sound designer respectively. Jeff Galegher is music producer and Sylvia Addison orchestra manager.

The musical was previously workshopped with Evan Rachel Wood and Amanda Seyfried, reflecting an ongoing development process. Callie Khouri described the project as “a wild and emotional ride made even better” by the contributions of the creative team, expressing excitement for audiences to experience this “timely re-telling.”

Supported by Sophie Hale, Roland Rudd, and the Charlotte Aitken Trust, the production’s priority booking will open on 20 April. RCI Theatricals will act as US general managers.
