Curve announces Christmas 2026 revival of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical
Curve in Leicester has revealed its 2026 Christmas production will be a revival of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Musical. The show promises a festive treat for families, combining classic and new songs in a stage adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved book.
Curve’s production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will run from 21 November 2026 to 9 January 2027, with a press night scheduled for 2 December. It is directed by Nikolai Foster, who also serves as Curve’s artistic director, while Leslie Travers is responsible for the set design.
The musical is based on Roald Dahl’s novel, with a stage adaptation by playwright David Greig. The score features original music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman, alongside songs from the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley.
The story follows the adventures of Charlie Bucket and other children as they explore Willy Wonka’s magical chocolate factory. Notable characters include Grandpa Joe, Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, Mike Teavee, and the Oompa-Loompas.
Curve’s chief executive Chris Stafford and Nikolai Foster emphasised the show’s family appeal, noting its enduring place as a beloved novel that has ignited imaginations. They described the musical as “scrumdiddlyumptious” and one of the venue’s most ambitious shows, highlighting its blend of classic film songs with new compositions by Tony Award-winning creatives Shaiman and Wittman.
The production will offer a range of accessible performances, including British Sign Language-interpreted, captioned, dementia-friendly, audio-described, and relaxed performances on specified dates throughout the run. These measures aim to welcome a broad audience, including vulnerable and disabled theatre-goers.
Educational and engagement initiatives will accompany the show, featuring a digital education pack, school workshops, and a theatre day on 10 December centred on the making of the production. Ticket sales will begin in stages from 22 April, with general booking opening on 28 April.
