Citizens Theatre announces autumn 2026 season with East is East and 1984 tour

Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre has revealed its autumn 2026 season featuring a major Scottish tour of 1984, alongside co-productions of East is East and Othello. The season highlights new work, returning favourites, and the venue’s first anniversary since redevelopment.

The Citizens Theatre’s autumn season, running from August to December 2026, opens with a substantial Scottish tour of 1984. Directed by artistic director Dominic Hill and adapted by Chris Hannan from George Orwell’s novel, the production will visit Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow in partnership with Dundee Rep Theatre and the Royal Lyceum Edinburgh.

Following 1984, the theatre presents Emma Rice’s Tristan and Yseult from 30 September to 3 October, marking its return since 2017. The main stage then hosts a co-production of Ayub Khan Din’s East is East from 7 to 17 October, directed by Kash Arshad who began his career at the Citizens. This staging commemorates the play’s 30th anniversary.

National Theatre of Scotland’s new adaptation of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie runs from 21 to 24 October in collaboration with the Royal Lyceum and Pitlochry Festival Theatre. The piece, adapted by David Harrower and directed by Vicky Featherstone, stars Gayle Rankin. A new production of Shakespeare’s Othello directed by Anthony Almeida is scheduled from 28 October to 4 November, in partnership with Northern Stage and HOME Manchester.

The festive season features a new staging of Cinderella, written by Stuart Paterson and directed by Joanna Bowman, running from 28 November to 31 December. Meanwhile, the newly opened studio theatre will host The Singer from 15 to 19 September, a gig theatre piece with music and lyrics by Grammy-nominated KT Tunstall and a book by Cora Bissett.

The season coincides with the first anniversary of the Citizens’ reopening in August 2025 following a two-year redevelopment. Dominic Hill reflected on the milestone, saying the season “builds on that momentum” by championing diverse voices and fostering shared theatrical experiences.

Together, these productions illustrate the Citizens’ commitment to varied storytelling and collaborative partnerships both locally and nationally within Scotland’s theatre landscape.
