John Proctor is the Villain to transfer to West End in 2027
Kimberly Belflower’s acclaimed play John Proctor is the Villain will transfer from the Royal Court Theatre to Wyndham’s Theatre in the West End for a limited 12-week season in early 2027. The move marks a major milestone for the production, which has been praised for its innovative response to Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.
John Proctor is the Villain, directed by Danya Taymor, is currently playing a sold-out run at the Royal Court’s Jerwood Theatre Downstairs until 25 April as part of the theatre’s 70th anniversary season. The production will open at Wyndham’s Theatre from 2 February to 24 April 2027.
The Royal Court cast features Sadie Soverall as Shelby Holcomb and Dónal Finn as Mr Smith, alongside Lauryn Ajufo, Charlie Borg, Reece Braddock, Holly Howden Gilchrist, Clare Hughes, Miya James, and Molly McFadden. Taymor has reunited the original Broadway creative team for this London staging.
John Proctor is the Villain was nominated for seven Tony Awards during its 2025 Broadway run at the Booth Theatre, including Best Play and Best Actress for star Sadie Sink. It has received enthusiastic critical acclaim, with WhatsOnStage’s Sarah Crompton describing it as “art that helps us to understand life” and a compelling tribute to literature and dance.
The play is a direct response to Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, which had its London premiere at the Royal Court during its inaugural 1956 season. Belflower and Taymor expressed their joy at bringing the production to the West End, noting how it has “ignited London audiences” during its Royal Court run.
Full casting details for the West End transfer have yet to be confirmed. The production’s arrival at Wyndham’s Theatre is seen as a significant moment in the ongoing influence of Miller’s work and contemporary reimaginings of classic texts.
