Sandra Oh to lead National Theatre’s reimagined The Misanthrope with full cast revealed

The National Theatre has announced the full cast for its upcoming production of The Misanthrope, starring Sandra Oh in her National debut. The modern adaptation by Martin Crimp will run at the Lyttelton theatre from June 16 to August 1.

Sandra Oh, Golden Globe winner, takes the lead role of Alice in Martin Crimp’s contemporary verse adaptation of Molière’s classic The Misanthrope. The production, directed by Indhu Rubasingham, focuses on private relationships and public debate through the lens of a novelist who rejects superficial kindness.

The cast features Paul Chahidi and Abigail Cruttenden, previously announced, and adds Imogen Elliott as Esmée, Rina Fatania as Indira, Freddie MacBruce as Allen, Tom Mison as Stefan, and Jemima Rooper as Elaine. Younger performers include Arthur Blanc, Teddy Holton-Frances, Francesca Fullilove, and Poppy Townsend White in various roles.

Supporting company members include understudies Niamh James, Amira Matthews, Scott Sparrow, John Vernon, and Gabby Wong, ensuring coverage across multiple parts.

Creative collaborators on the production include set and costume designer Robert Jones, lighting designer Tim Lutkin, and composer Anna Meredith. Sound design is by Alexander Caplen, with movement direction by Lucy Hind and voice coaching from Jeannette Nelson.

Associate director Gitika Buttoo and associate set and costume designer Ethan Cheek complete the creative team. Casting was conducted by Alastair Coomer and Martin Poile.

The Misanthrope’s press night is scheduled for June 23, with the full run lasting until August 1 at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton. The play’s contemporary approach illuminates enduring themes through a modern perspective.
