Opera North reveals full cast for The Sound of Music revival at Leeds Playhouse
Opera North has announced the complete casting for its revival of The Sound of Music, which opens in July at Leeds Playhouse. The production reprises Curve Leicester’s staging and includes a 40-piece orchestra, highlighting the enduring appeal of this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.
Opera North’s upcoming production of The Sound of Music will run from 9 July to 1 August at Leeds Playhouse, with a press night on 9 July at 7pm. Leading the cast are Katie Bird as Maria and Edward Bennett as Captain von Trapp, roles previously revealed.
The revival is based on the Curve theatre’s original staging in Leicester from late 2025 and features the company’s chorus alongside a 40-piece orchestra. The production is directed by Nikolai Foster and includes a creative team of Michael Taylor (set and costume design), lighting designer Mark Henderson, and choreographer Ebony Molina.
Joining Bird and Bennett, the cast features Katherine Broderick as Mother Abbess; Abigail Sinclair and April Perrott alternate as Liesl von Trapp; Kamil Bień plays Rolf Gruber; Amy Freston is Baroness Elsa Schraeder; and Nicholas Butterfield takes the role of Max Detweiler. The ensemble rounds out with roles including Molly Barker-Knowles as Sister Berthe and Dean Robinson as Franz.
Musical direction is led by Oliver Rundell, with Ollie Khurshid as associate director and Dale White as associate choreographer. Casting consultancy was provided by Becky Paris.
The Sound of Music is the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that premiered on Broadway in 1959 and gained cinematic fame through the 1965 Oscar-winning film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.
Opera North is providing accessible performances during the run, including captioned, British Sign Language interpreted, and audio-described shows with touch tours. Tickets are available at £10 for under-30s, along with £22 seats via the theatre’s Secret Seats initiative.
This revival underscores Opera North’s commitment to large-scale musical productions with substantial live orchestration, continuing the legacy of The Sound of Music in UK regional theatre.
