Rent revival announces West End return with Duke of York’s Theatre run

Rent will mark its 30th anniversary with a West End revival opening at the Duke of York’s Theatre in September 2026. The production, directed by Olivier winner Luke Sheppard, promises a fresh take on Jonathan Larson’s seminal rock musical.

Rent, Jonathan Larson’s groundbreaking musical, will return to the West End in a bold new production running from 26 September 2026 at the Duke of York’s Theatre. The revival commemorates the 30th anniversary of the show, which originally premiered Off-Broadway in 1996 before transferring to Broadway, where it won multiple Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize.

The musical, inspired by Puccini’s La Bohème, follows young artists in New York’s East Village navigating poverty, relationships, creativity, and the AIDS crisis. Luke Sheppard, celebrated for his Olivier and WhatsOnStage awards, who previously directed a five-star revival at the Hope Mill Theatre in 2020 and 2021, helms this new West End production. Sheppard said it was “a dream come true” to bring the show to a larger stage while retaining its emotional core.

Producers Chris Harper and Sonia Friedman expressed excitement about the revival, noting Sheppard’s direction made the musical feel “immediate, emotional and utterly alive.” They highlighted plans to make the show “thrillingly fresh” while honouring its legacy, with tickets going on general sale soon and 10,000 priced at £35 or under.

The creative team includes Tom Jackson Greaves on choreography, David Woodhead on set design, Gabriella Slade on costumes, and Howard Hudson on lighting. Sound and audio production is led by Paul Gatehouse, with video design by George Reeve and Nathan Amzi. Jackie Saundercock handles make-up and hair, supported by musical supervisor Bill Sherman and musical director Katy Richardson.

Additional team members contributing to the production are intimacy director Asha Jennings-Grant, associate director Priya Patel Appleby, dialect coach Joe Trill, and casting directors Pearson Casting (UK) and Jim Carnahan CSA (US). An initial casting announcement for the revival has also been confirmed.

The announcement underscores Rent’s enduring influence as a rebellious rock musical and its ongoing resonance in contemporary theatre, revisiting issues of creativity and community in urban life three decades after its original debut.
