Kenneth Branagh, Helen Hunt and Bill Pullman star in RSC’s The Cherry Orchard

The Royal Shakespeare Company has announced the full cast for its summer production of The Cherry Orchard, a new version of Chekhov’s final play by Laura Wade. The high-profile lineup includes Kenneth Branagh, Helen Hunt and Bill Pullman, directed by RSC co-artistic director Tamara Harvey.

The RSC’s staging of The Cherry Orchard will run this summer at the Swan Theatre. The production is a contemporary adaptation by playwright Laura Wade and is helmed by Tamara Harvey, who is also co-artistic director of the company.

Kenneth Branagh takes on the role of Lopakhin, while Helen Hunt plays Madame Ranyevskaya and Bill Pullman appears as Gaev. The cast also features Chumisa Dornford-May as Anya, Alfred Enoch as Trofimov, Esther Smith as Varya and Sophie Stone as Sharlotta.

Several cast members make their debut with the RSC in this production. Harvey noted the presence of Dornford-May, following her acclaimed performance in Into the Woods, as well as Smith and Stone, actors she admires for their previous stage and screen work.

The Cherry Orchard is Anton Chekhov’s final play, a classic work that has seen myriad interpretations worldwide. This iteration, with Wade’s writing and Harvey’s direction, offers a fresh take from a leading contemporary theatre company.

The RSC’s announcement highlights its commitment to combining star power with rising talent, bringing both to the historic Swan Theatre setting. The production joins a tradition of major new adaptations of Chekhov’s plays at the company.

Further details on the run, including exact dates and ticket availability, are to be confirmed by the Royal Shakespeare Company.
