Olivier-winning Luke Sheppard appointed patron of British Youth Music Theatre
Luke Sheppard, the Olivier Award-winning director behind Paddington the Musical, has been named the new patron of the British Youth Music Theatre (BYMT), reinforcing the organisation’s role in nurturing emerging theatre talent.
The British Youth Music Theatre has announced that Luke Sheppard is its new Patron, marking an important milestone in its ongoing mission to support early-career theatre makers. Sheppard is a notable figure in UK theatre, having won the 2026 WhatsOnStage and Olivier Awards for Best Director for Paddington the Musical.
Sheppard’s professional directing career began with BYMT, where he joined their Creative Work Placement (CWP) scheme. He started as an assistant director on the 2007 production Force 9½, working under John Nicholson, a mentor who helped shape his career path.
Over the years, Sheppard maintained a strong creative relationship with BYMT, directing multiple productions including Mort in 2012, Soul Music in 2013 and 2014, Jabberwocky in 2017, and Help Get Me Out of this Musical in 2018. His involvement highlights BYMT’s role in fostering long-term artistic development.
Reflecting on his journey, Sheppard said: “I’m not exaggerating when I say I owe so much to my assistant director role with BYMT. It gave me a pathway beyond graduation, real experience on the ground, and connections that sprung me forwards into the professional landscape.”
He also emphasised the importance of initiatives like BYMT’s Creative Work Placement Scheme for young theatre professionals, stating that these opportunities are crucial to the future of the industry. As Patron, he plans to support the scheme and the wide range of training BYMT offers.
BYMT’s appointment of Sheppard as Patron comes as the organisation continues to prioritise practical training and mentorship for emerging theatre artists, reinforcing its pivotal role within the UK arts education ecosystem.
