Lewis Kidd replaces injured Robbie Scott as Renton in Trainspotting The Musical
A cast change has been confirmed for the world premiere of Trainspotting The Musical in London’s West End, with Lewis Kidd stepping in as Renton after Robbie Scott’s injury. The show, based on Irvine Welsh’s novel and featuring scores linked to the original film, opens in July 2026.
Trainspotting The Musical will open at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on Wednesday 15 July 2026, presented by Phil McIntyre Live. The production is written by Irvine Welsh, who also contributed to the music and lyrics alongside Stephen McGuinness, and is directed and developed by Caroline Jay Ranger.
The musical revisits beloved characters including Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy, and Kelly, charting their stories three decades after the 1996 film adaptation starring Ewan McGregor. That film was the highest-grossing UK film of 1996, winning a BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay and later being named among the British Film Institute’s 100 greatest British films of the 20th century.
Robbie Scott was initially cast as Renton, marking his West End debut. However, a social media announcement this weekend confirmed his withdrawal due to an injury sustained during rehearsals. Scott expressed hope to return as Renton for the upcoming tour starting in Edinburgh this autumn.
Stepping into the role of Renton in the West End will be Lewis Kidd, who was originally announced as part of the ensemble cast. Other confirmed cast members include Sheridan Townsley as Sick Boy, Kieran Andrew as Spud, Frankie O’Connor as Begbie, Finlay Paul as Tommy, and Rebecca McKinnis as Cathy Renton.
The production’s ensemble features Ally Kennard, Kieran Brown, Melanie Marshall, Samuel Stewart, Finlay McKillop, Ciara Ennis, Victoria Nicol, Kyra Fyvie, and Chris O’Mara. Alongside the cast, the creative team includes set and costume designer Colin Richmond, musical supervisor Stuart Morley, video designer Douglas O’Connell, choreographer Christina Andrea, lighting designer Ian Scott, and sound designer Rory Madden.
Associate director Denise Ranger and casting director Anne Vosser complete the creative crew. Tickets for the West End run are currently on sale, with further details on the announced tour accessible separately.
