Purple Rain, the new Broadway musical based on Prince’s iconic 1984 album and film, will begin performances in March 2027. The production explores The Kid’s journey as an aspiring musician in Minneapolis, featuring over 20 classic Prince songs.
Purple Rain will open at Broadway’s Majestic Theatre, with previews starting on 12 March 2027 and an official opening night set for 12 April 2027. The musical follows The Kid, a young musician navigating family challenges, rival performers, and the early stages of a music career in 1984 Minneapolis.
The show features a score of more than 20 songs by Prince, including hits like “When Doves Cry,” “I Would Die 4 U,” “Take Me with You,” and “The Beautiful Ones.” The book is by Peter Duchan, with direction by Saheem Ali and choreography by Ebony Williams.
Music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations are handled by Jason Michael Webb. Bobby Z and Morris Hayes, longtime collaborators of Prince, serve as music advisers on the production, ensuring authenticity in the musical’s sound.
The creative team also includes set designer David Zinn, video and projection designers Nathan Amzi and Joe Ransom, costume designer Montana Levi Blanco, lighting designer Justin Townsend, sound designer Gareth Owen, hair and wig designer Cookie Jordan, and makeup designer Kyle Krueger. Production stage management is led by Amanda Spooner, with casting by the TRC Company.
Purple Rain originally marked Prince’s film debut in 1984 and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. The accompanying album spent 24 weeks atop the Billboard 200 and recently re-entered the chart, reaffirming its lasting cultural impact.
Tickets for the Broadway production will go on sale in September, with casting details yet to be announced. The musical joins a growing list of adaptations that celebrate iconic pop music histories on Broadway.
