Theatre publicist Neil Reading dies aged 56 after short illness
Neil Reading, a respected theatre publicist known for his work across the West End and as a personal publicist to major stars, has died aged 56. His death marks the loss of a quietly influential figure in UK theatre publicity.
Neil Reading, founder of Neil Reading PR since 1992, died following a brief illness, leaving behind an extensive legacy in theatre publicity. His company maintained a steady presence in the West End and wider UK theatre scenes for more than two decades.
Reading also worked closely as a personal publicist for prominent stage and screen personalities such as Dawn French, Lenny Henry, John Bishop, Jason Manford, John Cleese, and Victoria Wood. His role involved managing public communications and nurturing client relationships with discretion and care.
Tributes from theatre figures and comedians have highlighted Reading’s character and professionalism. Dawn French described him as “a kind, decent, intelligent man, a proper gentleman in the old-fashioned way, quietly magnificent.”
John Bishop called Reading “a true gentleman” and “too humble to realise how much he meant to people,” while Jason Manford praised him as “a confidant and one of the most loyal, noble and brilliant men I have ever known.”
John Cleese remembered Reading as “a very kind, protective, sensible and caring man, who looked after his clients with great skill.” These reflections underline the deep respect Reading earned within the industry.
Neil Reading is survived by his daughter Rosa and his wife Claire. His passing will be felt across theatre publicity circles and among the many artists he supported over his career.
