Mari acquires ATG Entertainment, securing West End and Broadway theatres

Mari, the global events company founded by Ari Emanuel, has entered a definitive agreement to acquire ATG Entertainment, a major West End and Broadway theatre operator. This acquisition represents a significant shift in theatre ownership and points to potential long-term investment in live performance venues.

Mari has agreed to acquire ATG Entertainment from private equity firm Providence Equity, though the financial terms remain undisclosed. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions, with both companies continuing to operate independently until completion.

ATG Entertainment owns and operates a portfolio of 70 venues across the UK, US, Germany and Spain, including ten theatres in London’s West End and seven on Broadway. Combined, these venues host over 16,000 performances annually and accommodate more than 18 million audience members each year. ATG also produces and co-produces shows for the West End and Broadway markets.

Mari’s existing portfolio spans sports, art, entertainment and lifestyle events, such as Hyde Park Winter Wonderland and festivals at Hampton Court and Blenheim Palace in the UK. The company recently acquired the ticketing platform TodayTix, further expanding its foothold in live entertainment.

Ari Emanuel, founder and principal investor of Mari, highlighted his theatre background and described the deal as a “long-term bet” on the future of live performance, emphasising the unique connection live theatre fosters between talent and audiences.

Melanie Smith, ATG’s global chief executive, praised Mari’s understanding of live entertainment and the importance of theatres, staff and industry relationships. She welcomed Mari as the right owner for ATG’s next chapter and expressed gratitude to Providence Equity for their thirteen years of support.

Producer Sonia Friedman reflected on the power of live theatre to unite people and foster creativity. She welcomed Mari’s experience and long-term vision, stating it could help champion bold new work and reach more diverse audiences while safeguarding the future of live theatre.

Mari intends to be a long-term custodian of ATG’s theatres, focusing on their preservation, modernisation, enhancing audience experience and supporting new productions. The deal marks a notable consolidation in the live entertainment sector amid evolving industry dynamics.
