Scotsman Fringe First awards honour Traverse, Summerhall, Grid Iron and more

The Scotsman has announced the first round of Fringe First Award winners, celebrating outstanding world premieres at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Among the recipients are productions from Traverse Theatre, Summerhall, and Grid Iron, marking the ongoing vitality of the festival.

The initial batch of Fringe First Awards, recognised as some of the most prestigious theatre prizes at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, has been made public. These awards highlight new shows making their world debuts at the festival.

Traverse Theatre and Summerhall each secured two awards this week, with Grid Iron’s Mayflies and Palestine Comedy Club’s The Bridge also receiving honours. The full list of recognised shows includes The Singer and Supposing: at Traverse, Mayflies at Brown’s of Leith, Bigfoot Ripped My Dog In Half I Saw It and Roxy Toast at Summerhall, and The Bridge at Assembly.

Four of the six winning productions have received high praise from WhatsOnStage, including a five-star review for The Singer, created by Cora Bissett and KT Tunstall. This reflects strong critical acclaim alongside the official recognition.

Bigfoot Ripped My Dog In Half I Saw It, produced by Summerhall, is notably transferring to London following its Edinburgh premiere. This production brings Xhloe and Natasha their fourth Fringe First award, having won previously in 2022, 2023, and 2024.

The awards highlight a vibrant mix of theatrical voices and styles at the festival, with support spanning from venues like Traverse and Summerhall to more alternative spaces such as Assembly and Brown’s of Leith.

This round of winners underscores the ongoing importance of the Fringe Firsts in spotlighting fresh and impactful new theatre at one of the world’s largest arts festivals.
