Burlesque the Musical cancels Sunderland shows amid cast illness
The first UK tour of Burlesque the Musical, currently at Sunderland Empire, has cancelled several performances due to a virus affecting key cast members. This disruption highlights ongoing challenges for the production as it navigates a troubled touring debut.
Burlesque the Musical, adapted from the 2010 film, has suspended its Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Monday performances at Sunderland Empire following illness among several principal cast members. A planned local press night on Monday was also cancelled. The venue stated they are reinforcing the cast with additional covers who have previously performed in the show to ensure reopening on Friday.
The cancellations provide essential rehearsal time for new cast members and ticket holders have been informed of the changes. Burlesque began its tour last week in Sunderland with three shows on Friday and Saturday and is scheduled to remain at the Empire until Saturday 22 August.
Originally set to launch at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking on 25 July before touring 24 UK venues across 2026 and 2027, the production’s opening was shifted to Sunderland. The tour will visit Woking Theatre from 3 to 7 November 2026 as part of its wider itinerary.
Faye Brookes stars as Tess Richarde, the owner of the Burlesque Lounge, a role first played by Cher in the film. The cast includes Gracie O’Brien as Ali Rose, Ryan Carter as Sean and Ms Loretta, Davide Fienauri as Vince, Tyler Davis as Jackson, and Vanessa Ela Young as Nikki.
The musical features songs by Christina Aguilera, Sia, Diane Warren, Jess Folley, Todrick Hall, and Steven Antin, the original film director who also serves as writer and creative director. Direction is by Racky Plews, with choreography by Robin Antin and Aaron Renfree, supported by associate choreographer Xena Gusthart.
Separately, a London production of Burlesque the Musical has postponed its run to 2027, reflecting ongoing instability. This latest disruption comes amid a history of creative upheaval, including changes to the creative team and the departure of former director, choreographer, and star Todrick Hall.
The current cancellations underline the challenges the show faces as it attempts to establish itself on UK stages after a rocky start in the West End and turbulent touring preparations.
