Marcos Morau develops David Bowie-inspired dance piece Subject to Change
A new dance work celebrating David Bowie’s legacy, Subject to Change – A Dance for David Bowie, is in development by Marcos Morau with a UK premiere slated for Sadler’s Wells in autumn 2028.
Subject to Change – A Dance for David Bowie is a forthcoming dance production created by Marcos Morau, which will explore the multiple personas of the iconic musician and the cultural shifts they inspired. The work is a collaboration between Sadler’s Wells, Bunkamura Tokyo, and La Veronal, with premieres planned in Luxembourg in spring 2028, the UK in autumn 2028, and Tokyo in spring 2029.
Morau, known for his use of abstract movement and physical theatre, intends to examine Bowie’s artistic cycle of reinvention through dance. The piece will feature iconic Bowie songs alongside original vocals, reimagined with choral elements and contributions from vocalist María Arnal.
The musical direction is led by Alex Röser Vatiché and Ben Meerwein of OZCUR, while the production’s visual elements include costumes by Silvia Delagneau and set design by Max Glaenzel. Casting details are yet to be confirmed.
Co-producers supporting the project include Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura, La Biennale di Venezia, and Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon. This multinational partnership underscores the international significance of Bowie’s enduring influence.
Morau described Bowie’s creative process as a form of “artistic reincarnation,” highlighting the musician’s deliberate shedding of personas—from Ziggy Stardust to Blackstar—as a mechanism of continual renewal. He explained the piece is “a work about that cycle of reincarnation… the act of dying and being reborn, again and again, as a way of remaining alive.”
The production aims to re-enact Bowie’s transformative cycle in real time on stage, combining sound and movement. Morau called it “an honour to create a new piece” inspired by Bowie’s artistic evolution and continual self-reinvention.
