Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Warriors musical enters workshop stage with new creative team
Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis have begun workshopping their adaptation of Warriors, the musical based on the 1979 film and novel. The project is notable for its evolving creative team and Miranda’s shared insights from the rehearsal room.
Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed that Warriors, his musical co-created with Eisa Davis, is currently in workshop development. The news came via an Instagram post featuring the cover of the workshop script, emphasising the ongoing writing and rewriting process with actors and musicians at music stands.
The musical is adapted from the 1979 Paramount film Warriors and Sol Yurick’s novel, recounting the journey of a New York City gang travelling from Coney Island to the Bronx while falsely accused of murder. Miranda described the experience as “the journey home keeps getting deeper,” signalling a deepening exploration of the story.
Directing duties on the stage version are undertaken by Jenny Koons, known for co-directing Head Over Heels and directing So the Birds Are at Playwright’s Horizons. The choreography is handled by Andy Blankenbuehler, a longtime Miranda collaborator with credits including In the Heights, Hamilton and Bring It On.
Music supervision for the production is provided by Kurt Crowley, who previously worked on the Warriors album and Hamilton. The album, described as an “immersive listening experience,” was highly praised with a full five-star review from WhatsOnStage in 2024.
Specific dates, venues and the overall timeline for the musical’s production have not yet been announced. Meanwhile, the soundtrack remains available to stream, offering an early glimpse into the musical’s themes and atmosphere.
The workshop phase marks a significant step in translating Warriors from an immersive album to a fully staged production, continuing a trend of innovative musical storytelling linked to Miranda’s artistic projects.
