The Phantom of the Opera continues its celebrated run as it enters its 40th year in the West End, having originally opened in 1986. It ranks as one of the longest-running and most widely seen musicals globally, with an audience estimated at 160 million across 217 cities in 52 territories and 23 languages.
The musical’s score by Andrew Lloyd Webber includes iconic numbers such as “The Music of the Night”, “All I Ask of You”, and the title song. The story, based on Gaston Leroux’s novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, follows Christine Daaé, a young soprano drawn under the spell of a mysterious masked composer living beneath the Paris Opera House.
This enduring production is produced by Cameron Mackintosh and features music and lyrics by Lloyd Webber, Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe, with a book by Stilgoe and Lloyd Webber. It showcases design work by Maria Björnson, lighting by Andrew Bridge, and choreography originally by Gillian Lynne.
Directed by Seth Sklar-Heyn in this iteration, the production retains the creative legacy of Harold Prince’s original direction. Anna Zavelson joins the cast supported by Equity UK through an exchange programme with American Equity, marking the collaborative nature of this international casting.
As The Phantom of the Opera enters its fifth decade on the West End stage, the casting of Zavelson reflects ongoing efforts to refresh the production while maintaining its status as a staple of musical theatre worldwide.
