Charlotte d’Amboise to star alongside Jesse Tyler Ferguson in Tru at Menier Chocolate Factory

Charlotte d’Amboise will join Jesse Tyler Ferguson in Jay Presson Allen’s play Tru at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory this autumn, revisiting the life of Truman Capote. The production offers a rare glimpse into Capote’s solitary crisis during December 1975, drawn entirely from his own words.

Tru, set in December 1975, explores Truman Capote’s isolation in his New York apartment as he faces a personal crisis that has severed his ties with his social circle. The play, originally staged in 1989, uses only Capote’s own words to paint a portrait of the author’s emotional turmoil.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, known for his television work in Modern Family and stage credits like Take Me Out and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, leads the cast. Broadway veteran Charlotte d’Amboise, whose credits include A Chorus Line, Sweet Charity and Chicago, joins Ferguson for the London run.

Directed by Rob Ashford, the production will open at the Menier Chocolate Factory on 27 September, with previews starting on 19 September and performances running until 14 November. This staging follows its previous run at New York’s House of the Redeemer’s Library in March, where Ashford, Ferguson and d’Amboise also collaborated.

The creative team features set designer Paul Farnsworth, costume designer Jaimal Odedra, lighting designer Jamie Platt, sound designer Adam Cork and associate director and Swan walking cover Kate Tydman. The Menier Chocolate Factory presents Tru in association with Seaview, OHenry Productions, Mickey Liddell & Pete Shilaimon, and A Dog Named Beckett Productions.

Tru’s depiction of Capote’s fraught final days highlights the enduring fascination with the author’s complex public and private personas. This focused revival reflects a continued interest in theatrical biographies drawn from source material rather than dramatized dialogue.
