Cole Escola to star in West End run of wartime comedy Oh, Mary!

Tony Award-winning creator Cole Escola will take over the lead role in the West End production of Oh, Mary! in July 2026, following a run led by Catherine Tate. The historically dubious comedy has drawn attention for its playful reimagining of Mary Todd Lincoln’s struggles.

Oh, Mary!, a wartime comedy centred on the bored and alcoholic Mary Todd Lincoln, arrives in the West End with Escola stepping into the title role from 20 July to 15 August 2026. The show’s plot explores Mary’s cabaret ambitions amid the undermining presence of her closeted homosexual husband, Abraham Lincoln, the US president.

Currently, Catherine Tate stars as Mary Todd Lincoln, succeeding WhatsOnStage Award nominee Mason Alexander Park, who originated the role in this smash Broadway hit. Priority booking for Escola’s dates opens ahead of general ticket sales due this Friday.

The production features Scott Karim as Mary’s husband, alongside Dino Fetscher, Kate O’Donnell and Oliver Stockley in supporting roles. Sam Pinkleton, a Tony Award winner, directs the West End premiere, which closely follows the show’s Broadway debut in 2024.

Oh, Mary! won the Olivier Award for Best New Entertainment and was praised by WhatsOnStage’s Sarah Crompton as “80 minutes of perfectly judged silliness”. The creative team includes scenic designer dots, costume designer Holly Pierson, lighting designer Cha See and sound designers Daniel Kluger and Drew Levy.

Additional contributors to the production are wig designer Leah J Loukas, props supervisor Addison Heeren and arranger David Dabbon, while casting was led by Stuart Burt. Auditions for the role of Mary Todd Lincoln starting from 17 August will be announced later.

The show has also extended its West End run into 2027, confirming its continued popularity and influence in London theatre circles.
