Darren Day to Star as Sam Phillips in Barn Theatre’s Million Dollar Quartet

Darren Day, known for Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, will lead the cast of Million Dollar Quartet at the Barn Theatre this summer. The revival focuses on the legendary 1956 jam session of Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley.

Darren Day will take on the role of Sam Phillips in Million Dollar Quartet, playing at the Barn Theatre from 15 June to 22 August. The musical dramatises the iconic 4 December 1956 session at Sun Records in Memphis where four rock and roll legends came together.

The show explores the complex dynamics between the artists as ambition, rivalry and fame collide. It features classic songs such as “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Walk the Line” and “Hound Dog.”

Directed by Jonathan O’Boyle, the production’s book is by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux. Further casting and creative team details are yet to be announced.

Barn Theatre CEO and artistic director Iwan Lewis praised Day’s casting as “incredibly fitting,” noting Sam Phillips’ pivotal role in shaping the music industry and Day’s own history with defining musical theatre roles.

A national press night is scheduled for 18 June, setting the stage for what the theatre describes as “a real treat” for its audiences.

The production follows a well-trodden path of musical theatre shows that recreate seminal moments in music history, highlighting tensions and creativity behind the scenes.
