Hull Truck Theatre unveils autumn/winter 2026 season with The 39 Steps and festive shows
Hull Truck Theatre has announced its remaining 2026 programme, featuring a new co-production of The 39 Steps and seasonal family favourites including The Wind in the Willows and Hansel and Gretel. The diverse autumn and winter season offers theatre, comedy, music, and interactive experiences.
The season at Hull Truck Theatre opens on 21 October with a new co-production of The 39 Steps, presented in partnership with Derby Theatre. Directed by Cal McCrystal, the comedy thriller adapts John Buchan’s novel and Alfred Hitchcock’s film, with four actors playing over 130 characters through 14 November.
For Christmas, the main stage will host a production of The Wind in the Willows from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. This adaptation by Mark Powell, directed by Hull Truck’s artistic director Mark Babych, reimagines Kenneth Grahame’s classic story for families, recommended for ages seven and above. The production features original music and inventive design and is supported by Hull Trains.
The Godber Studio will offer a new adaptation of Hansel and Gretel, written and directed by associate director Tom Saunders, from 10 December to 3 January. Designed for children aged three to six, this festive show incorporates songs, colourful set and costume design, and interactive storytelling. Saunders described it as a playful modern twist on the fairy tale with “a whole lot of mischief” and “festive spirit.”
Also on offer during the season is A Great Halloween Adventure, set for late October, which combines arts and crafts with an original Halloween-themed story in an interactive format.
Drama highlights include a production of Michael Morpurgo’s First World War story Private Peaceful (1 to 3 October), a psychological thriller It Walks Around the House at Night by Tim Foley (6 to 8 October), and a revival of Romeo & Juliet scheduled for spring 2027. Hull Truck offers a “Drama Deal” with a 25% discount for audiences booking two or more productions.
The theatre’s visiting drama programme presents works such as Iron, starring real-life mother and daughter Christine and Lois Mackie, as well as Rum, Batty, Haunted Shadows: The Gothic Tales of Edith Nesbit and Close Enough To Touch.
Comedy performances feature acts including Gary Meikle, Ivo Graham, Paul Foot, Stewart Lee, Nish Kumar, Daniel Foxx and Janet Street-Porter. The Hull Comedy Festival returns with shows from Frankie Monroe, Best of ‘Ull, International Idiots Live, Aidan Jones and others.
Continuing a long-standing partnership, Hull Freedom Festival will bring Gravity & Other Myths’ acclaimed acrobatic production 10,000 Hours to the theatre from 3 to 5 September. The autumn programme also comprises the Hull Jazz Festival with performances by the Zoe Rahman Trio, Christ-Stéphane Boizi Septet and Out of The Box, alongside music and musical theatre events such as Candlelit Queen, Oh What A Night!, How Could I Forget and Bright Places.
