Ian McKellen and stars join West End curtain calls for Denville Hall fundraiser

Renowned stage and screen performers will make special curtain call appearances on 18 July across the West End to support Denville Hall’s centenary fundraising campaign. The event, “Theatre Gives Day,” aims to bolster efforts for a £26 million appeal to improve care facilities for retired entertainment professionals.

Denville Hall has announced Theatre Gives Day as part of its 100th anniversary celebrations, with ambassadors making appearances at curtain calls to encourage donations. The event will take place on Saturday 18 July across multiple West End theatres hosting popular productions.

Participating shows include High Society at the Barbican Centre, The Play That Goes Wrong at the Duchess Theatre, and The Phantom of the Opera at His Majesty’s Theatre. Other productions involved are Moulin Rouge! at the Piccadilly Theatre, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Palace Theatre, Les Misérables at the Sondheim Theatre, and Hamilton at the Victoria Palace Theatre, among others.

Current Denville Hall ambassadors include Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Helen Mirren, Derek Jacobi, Simon Russell Beale, and Harriet Walter. Other supporters comprise Michael Ball, David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, and Felicity Kendal, reflecting broad industry backing.

Joanne Benjamin, chair of trustees, expressed gratitude to theatres and industry figures for participating in this celebration, which supports the “haven of rest” that has cared for retired actors since opening in 1926. She emphasised the hope that Theatre Gives Day will boost the Centenary Appeal funding.

Denville Hall offers residential, nursing, and specialist dementia care to those with careers in the performing arts, alongside promoting creativity and community among residents. The charity’s Centenary Appeal aims to raise £13 million for two new assisted living blocks and modern facilities including a café, cinema, yoga studio, and accessible gardens.

An additional £13 million will establish Alfred’s Fund, an endowment ensuring the charity’s sustainability for the next century. The appeal is led by presidents Helen Mirren, Ian McKellen, and Daniel Radcliffe, with the public campaign having launched in spring 2026.

Theatre Gives Day is part of a year-long centenary programme that will feature further events and fundraising initiatives to secure Denville Hall’s mission well into the future, supported by major philanthropic partners and industry leaders.
