In the Heights returns to New York City Center for 2026 gala run
New York City Center will present a gala production of In the Heights this autumn, staging Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes’s celebrated musical. The performance marks a notable cultural return to the Washington Heights story, running from late October to early November.
In the Heights will be performed at New York City Center from 28 October to 8 November 2026, with a gala opening night scheduled for 28 October. The musical, with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes, explores the lives of an immigrant community in New York City’s Washington Heights neighbourhood.
Miranda, who originally played the role of bodega owner Usnavi when the show opened on Broadway, co-created the musical which began as a college project at Wesleyan University. The production had early runs at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in 2005 and Off-Broadway in 2007 before transferring to Broadway.
In the Heights received widespread acclaim, winning four Tony Awards in 2008 including Best Musical, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2009. The show was later adapted into a film directed by Jon M. Chu, released in 2020, featuring Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, Melissa Barrera, Daphne Rubin-Vega, and Jimmy Smits.
The 2026 staging at City Center will be directed by David Mendizábal, known for his work on Mexodus. Additional creative team members are yet to be announced, and casting will be managed by The Telsey Office.
Tickets are currently on sale to City Center patrons via the venue’s website. Members gain early access from 7 May at noon ET, followed by Encores! subscribers from 20 May, with general booking opening on 21 May at noon ET.
This return of In the Heights continues to highlight the musical’s enduring relevance and ongoing resonance with stories of community and identity in New York theater.
