Leeds Playhouse reveals cast for 30th anniversary revival of Brassed Off

Leeds Playhouse has announced the full cast for its new production of Brassed Off, marking the show’s 30th anniversary. Directed by Amy Leach, the staging will run in the Quarry Theatre from 18 June to 11 July.

Leeds Playhouse’s revival of Brassed Off, set in a 1990s Yorkshire mining town, centres on the Grimley brass band as the community grapples with the closure of its colliery. David Birrell will lead the cast as Danny, returning to the venue following previous roles in Wendy and Peter Pan and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Robin Morrissey plays Phil, Maddie Hansen takes the role of Gloria, and Frazer Hadfield is Andy. The cast also features Wendy Albiston as Vera, Andy Cryer as Jim, Ewen Cummins as Harry, Danielle Henry as Sandra, Alasdair Linn as Callum, and Pauline Tomlin as Rita.

Ensemble members Stacey Ghent and Pete Sowerby serve as covers, while four members of the Playhouse Youth Theatre—Oliver Bowman and Stuart Naylor (sharing Shane), along with Aria Trijonyte and Maari Kent (sharing Melody)—will also appear.

The production is adapted for the stage by Paul Allen and includes live music performed by Horbury Victoria Brass Band and Wakefield Metropolitan Brass Band. Leach highlighted the company’s strong personal connections to the story through mining heritage, music, or brass banding.

The creative team boasts designer Katie Scott, lighting designer Jai Morjaria, sound designer John Biddle, musical director Jonathan Mitra, and others including fight director Kev McCurdy and assistant director Verity Richards. Audio description and BSL interpreting are also incorporated.

This revival underscores the enduring appeal of Brassed Off’s narrative of community resilience and the unifying power of art, particularly brass band music, in northern England’s cultural landscape.
